What Is Health Span

Everyone talks about extending their ‘life span’ but what interests me more is extending and improving our ‘health span’. The quality of our later years is as important as the quantity and whatever your legacy, being healthy is going to help you create that.

What is it about

For a grandmother, that might be being able to play with her grandchildren. It might be continuing to enjoy gardening, or golf.

I have a personal experience of our changing life stages, and I know that how we feel about ourselves starts from within.

I am where I am because of a journey I started more than 30 years ago but it’s never too late for transformation. Whether you want to improve in a specific area or need a holistic makeover, I would love to help you on that journey, and make it interesting and fun at the same time.

I have clients who I’ve trained and coached through bereavement, divorce, retirement and times of big change. The process itself is a therapeutic one. Some clients just want to walk and talk while exercising and get outside in nature.
As a personal trainer I can provide motivation and accountability, which can be helpful in maintaining your active lifestyle. I can also help you stay on track with your routine, reduce the risk of injuries and make progress towards your goals.

“It’s estimated that people aged 60 or over make up about 12% of the global population.”

Improving your quality of life

Maintaining good health in your fifties and beyond is important for several reasons. As you age, your risk of developing chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer increases. By maintaining good health, you can reduce this risk and improve your quality of life.

An active lifestyle helps maintain strength, flexibility and balance, as well as improve cardiovascular health. Walking, jogging, cycling or swimming can improve your heart health and increase your endurance while anaerobic exercises help maintain muscle mass and bone density.

“Yoga, Pilates and tai chi are great for improving flexibility and balance.”

Muscles Matter

From the time you are born to around the time you turn 30, your muscles grow larger and stronger. But, at some point in your 30s, you start to lose muscle mass and function. The cause is age-related sarcopenia (or sarcopenia with aging). Physically inactive people can lose as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after the age 30, and even if you are active, you’ll still have some muscle loss.
There’s no test or specific level of muscle mass that will diagnose sarcopenia but any loss of muscle matters because it depletes strength and mobility.
Sarcopenia typically accelerates around the age of 75. But it may also speed up as early as 65, or as late as 80. It’s partly why bodies become frail, and a cause of falls and fractures in older adults.
So what can we do? The primary treatment for sarcopenia is exercise; specifically resistance training or strength training.

Let’s talk about Hormones

As you age, your hormone levels may change, which can affect your health in different ways. For men, testosterone levels may begin to decline, which can lead to decreased muscle mass and bone density, as well as changes in mood and libido.
Women – from perimenopause onwards – can experience hormonal changes that can affect sleep, bone density, mood, and sexual function, and may be advised to try Bio-Identical HRT.
As you age, your hormone production may become imbalanced. With proper diagnostic testing and personalized care, you can holistically bring that balance that can aid in all kinds of care.
Taking Bio-Identical Estrogen along with Progesterone can:

  • Enhance cognitive function
  • Improve skin elasticity
  • Prevent Osteoporosis
  • Exert a powerful influence over metabolic health
  • Help control appetite and weight gain
  • Help lose body fat
  • Prevent binge eating as it helps Leptin which promotes feeling of satiety to work more effectively and achieve a sense of fullness
