Should you exercise when depressed? According to recent studies you should.

A study conducted by the University of South Australia involving 128,000 participants found that exercise was 1.5 times more effective for depression and anxiety than medication.

But how does exercise reduce depression symptoms? Read below to learn more about exercise when depressed and how to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

Why You Should Exercise When Depressed

Most people experience depression or symptoms of depression at some point in their life.

There are many causes of depression. In people with clinical depression, their symptoms may be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in their brain.

Treatment for depression often includes medications like antidepressants. However, antidepressants can have negative side effects. They are also not as effective in treating depression for some people.

Exercise, when depressed, may be a natural treatment option for symptoms of depression.

So, what are the mental health benefits of exercise when depressed?

Exercise Releases Endorphins

High-intensity exercise releases endorphins which produces a sense of euphoria and physical pleasure. Also known as the ‘runner’s high’.

However, low-intensity activity can be even more beneficial. Low-intensity exercise (such as brisk walking) stimulates the release of proteins called neurotrophic or growth factors. These cause nerve cells to grow and make new connections in your brain.

These new nerve connections rewire your brain function in the hippocampus region, which is responsible for regulating mood. Basically, regular exercise when depressed makes you a happier person.

Exercise Improves Your Overall Health

Exercise triggers a biological cascade of events that has tremendous health benefits. Regular exercise helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, lowers blood pressure, and helps with insomnia.

Poor health exacerbates symptoms of depression. Sometimes, poor health may be the cause of depression.

By improving your overall health, you may reduce health-related symptoms of depression.

Exercise Improves Body Image and Confidence

Depression can heavily impact a person’s self-esteem, making them feel inadequate and ashamed. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to combat this.

Regular exercise has been proven to increase positive feelings about the way we look and feel. Feeling better about your body boosts your self-confidence. It also helps improve self-discipline, which can help you complete other goals.

The confidence you’ll gain from the physical and mental benefits of exercise when depressed can greatly improve your quality of life.
